A Cozy Holiday Wassail to Warm the Body and Calm the Mind

A Cozy Holiday Wassail to Warm the Body and Calm the Mind

The holiday season is meant to feel joyful, but for many people, it also comes with a lot of noise. Busy schedules, family gatherings, travel, colder weather, and the pressure to do everything “right” can quietly push the nervous system into overdrive.

One of my favorite ways to bring the body back into balance during this time of year is through simple, intentional rituals. Warm drinks, familiar scents, and natural ingredients can gently signal the body to slow down and feel safe again.

That’s precisely why I love making a traditional Holiday Wassail, a comforting drink that fills your home with cozy aromas and helps you feel calm and supported during the busiest season of the year.

Recently, I shared this recipe on WGN Weekend Morning News as part of my “Jewell’s Jems” segment, highlighting how essential oils can promote calm and seasonal wellness.

Below is my personal version of the recipe, designed to be grounding and soothing, inviting you to experience its comforting aroma and relaxing effects.

The Audree Lee Holiday Wassail Recipe

This recipe is designed to be warming, aromatic, and flexible. You can serve it hot or cold, adjust the spice level, or lightly sweeten it if needed.

Ingredients

  • ½ gallon apple juice
  • 1 quart fresh-squeezed orange juice
  • 1 cup frozen cranberries, thawed
  • 1 organic lemon, sliced
  • 1 organic orange, sliced
  • ¼ cup fresh-squeezed ginger juice
  • 2–3 cinnamon sticks
  • 12 whole cloves

Essential Oils (added at the end):

  • 2–3 drops lemon essential oil
  • 3 drops wild orange essential oil
  • 2 drops cinnamon essential oil
  • 1 drop clove essential oil
  • 1 drop ginger essential oil

How to Prepare

Add all ingredients except the essential oils to a large pot. Gently heat on the stove until the flavors blend and the aroma fills the space. Take your time, slow heating helps you feel more relaxed and present during the ritual.

Once the wassail reaches your preferred temperature and flavor balance, remove it from heat. Add the essential oils drop by drop, stirring gently. Taste as you go and adjust if needed.

For serving, garnish with extra lemon slices, orange slices, and cranberries for a festive touch.

Optional: If you prefer a sweeter drink, you can add a small amount of date syrup or let guests sweeten their own cups.

Why This Drink Supports Relaxation

This isn’t just a seasonal beverage. It’s a sensory experience that supports the nervous system in a very real way.

  • Citrus oils like lemon and wild orange are uplifting and emotionally balancing. They help lighten mental heaviness and bring a sense of clarity and comfort.
  • Warm spices such as cinnamon, clove, and ginger are grounding. They encourage circulation, warmth, and a feeling of stability, especially helpful during cold months.
  • Heat + aroma together activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of the body responsible for rest and calm.

When we slow down enough to smell, sip, and be present, the body receives the message that it’s okay to relax.

Using Essential Oils Safely and Intentionally

When using essential oils internally, quality and dosage matter. Always choose high-quality oils from a trusted source, and remember that more is not better. Just a few drops are enough to create a powerful effect, both aromatically and emotionally.

If you’re new to essential oils or unsure which ones are right for you, this recipe can also be enjoyed simply as a stovetop simmer without adding oils. Even the natural scents of citrus and spices can be deeply calming.

Making Space for Calm During the Holidays

The holidays don’t need to be perfect to be meaningful. Sometimes the most supportive thing you can do for yourself is create a moment of warmth and quiet in the middle of the season.

This Holiday Wassail is one of my favorite ways to create a moment of warmth and quiet during the busy season. I invite you to make it part of your evening wind-down or holiday gathering to bring calm and nourishment into your routine.
