How to Survive the “Sugar Season” with Smarter Sweet Choices!

How to Survive the “Sugar Season” with Smarter Sweet Choices!

Halloween is right around the corner, and before we know it, we’ll be diving into Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even Super Bowl Sunday.

That means we’re officially entering what I like to call “sugar season” — the time of year when sweet treats seem to appear everywhere: on office counters, at parties, and in our own kitchens.

Recently, I had the fantastic opportunity to join Jewell Hillery on WGN News’ “Jewell’s Jems” to talk about this very topic: how to enjoy the season without letting sugar take over your plate and your energy.

You can watch the whole segment here: Jewell’s Jems: Tips for Better Choices and Healthier Eating During “Sugar Season”.

Why This Season Is So Sneaky

From Halloween to Super Bowl Sunday, Americans consume more sugar than at any other time of the year. It’s not just the obvious desserts.

Sugar hides in sauces, dressings, coffee creamers, and even snacks that claim to be healthy.

During my segment with Jewell, I mentioned something I often see with my clients:

“From Oct. 31 to Super Bowl Sunday, the most sugar is eaten. It’s in every food, at the counters, it’s everywhere. And it seems like we can’t get away from it.”

While it may feel impossible to resist, it’s not about total elimination. It’s about awareness, finding balance, and making smarter swaps that satisfy your cravings while nourishing your body.

My Rule of Thumb: Treats, Not Triggers

I always stress to my clients that sugar isn’t the enemy. It’s the way we use it that matters. An occasional treat is incredible. The issue arises when we turn to sugar to cope with stress, fatigue, or emotions.

Instead of focusing on restriction, I concentrate on substitution. The goal is to satisfy your sweet tooth while keeping your energy steady and your body nourished.

My Favorite Healthy “Candy” Alternatives

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I love creating simple, natural recipes that feel indulgent without the sugar crash. Two of my favorite seasonal treats are:

Date Snickers Bars

Made with Medjool dates, peanut butter, and chocolate date syrup, these bars are sweet, chewy, and salty — all the best parts of a Snickers bar but powered by real food. The natural sugars from dates provide lasting energy and fiber, while the peanuts add satisfying protein.

Date Coconut Peppermint Bites

If you’re a fan of peppermint and chocolate, these bites are a must-try. The combination of coconut, nuts, and a touch of doTERRA Peppermint essential oil creates a refreshing treat that feels festive but stays health-conscious.

Both recipes are freezer-friendly and make great grab-and-go snacks when you’re craving something sweet. You can find the full recipes and instructions on my website.

A Balanced Approach

Sugar season doesn’t have to become guilt season.

Enjoy the celebrations. Savor the dessert. But also listen to your body, nourish it with real food, and keep hydration, movement, and mindful eating front and center. This is the true essence of the holiday season: enjoying every moment with intention and joy.

If you find yourself struggling with sugar cravings or emotional eating this time of year, remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about progress.

“It’s definitely not an absolute no-no, because we want to treat ourselves.”

That’s what I shared on WGN, and it’s what I remind myself of. Life is meant to be enjoyed, just with a little more intention.
